Folsom - August Meeting

I know it has been a few months since we have updated but we decided to hit the restart button on bookclub. We were all falling into a slump of not reading and using our meetings as a hangout instead of as a book club. For our first meeting after this restart, it was Nicole's pick and she chose Folsom by Tarryn Fisher and Willow Aster.

The nation as we know it is a thing of the past.

With the male species on the verge of extinction, a society called the End Men is formed to save the world. Folsom Donahue is one of twelve men whose sole purpose is to repopulate the Regions. The endless days spent having sex with strangers leaves Folsom with an emptiness no amount of women, money, or status can fill.

Until Gwen.

Gwen has wanted a child for as long as she can remember, but when she finally gets a chance to have her own, she uncovers a long hidden truth. The injustice she sees moves her to help save the men whom no one else believes need saving.

A forbidden love, grown in a time of despair, ignites a revolution.

Folsom and Gwen, torn between their love for each other and their sense of duty, must make a choice. But some will stop at nothing to destroy them.

Due to the nature of the book we read, we decided a drink was in order. What better than a blow job? The drink was delicious and I highly suggest it. I found the recipe here: Craft Bartending

For the first time in a while, everyone who attended the meeting read the book! It was really exciting that we could all sit down and discuss it. The one thing we all agreed on was that we liked the premise of the book.

A few members felt there was not enough world-building. They wanted to know more about the scientific side of the story, what is being done to help find the Y chromosones and stop extinction. Another thing mentioned was although technically this book was all about sex, the sex scenes were not as graphic as some other romance/erotic novels that have been read. There was not any cringe-worthy wording done that made us want to put it down.

I think the book was overall enjoyed. A few members rated it 5 stars while some rated it 3. Next month is Heather's pick and she chose: Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson. Stay tuned to see what our members think of our next book.

2018 End of Year Wrap Up

So November and December were a bust for Book club. This tends to happen around holiday time because it is hard to gather such a large group when everyone is also dealing with extra family, cooking, cleaning, and all things dealing with presents. January will also be a no book club month because for some reason this year we all seem to need some down time after Christmas. We will resume book club meetings in February when we come together after reading Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.     I thought we could start off the new year by talking about how last years reading goals went for us and what our reading goals look like this year. Sam : I read 38 books and my goal was 24! I didn't meet all my goals though because I didn't finish the read harder challenge and I also stopped keeping track of what I had read which is really disappointing. I'm really hoping to keep track of everything this coming year and finally finish the challenge! In 2017 I ...

September Meeting

The book of the month was: Who Am I If You're Not You? By Lynn Thorne     Real-life couple Marika and Jennifer were two soul mates facing a seemingly blissful future together until Marika revealed her authentic self: she was meant to be a man. Told from Jennifer's perspective, Who Am I If You're Not You? demonstrates the human capacity to love. How much pain can one woman stand? How much conflict can one couple overcome and stay committed to their marriage?     As her wife transitions, Jennifer goes through her own personal hell to find herself. Anorexia. Cutting. Crippling depression. But what she discovers in her quest to save herself will define her life, her love, and her marriage. 3/11 members read and finished this book for the meeting 3/11 members are part way through this book     The author of this book, Lynn Thorne, is a local author who happened to be at our town's Pride event selling her book. Rachel asked her if she would lik...

Welcome!

We are a group of 11 people who love all different types of literature. Some of us read a lot and some of us read a little but no matter what we’re reading we love to discuss it. We thought this would be a good way to share all of our bookish thoughts. Feel free to leave yours as well! I Opened a Book By Julia Donaldson I opened a book and in I strode. Now nobody can find me. I’ve left my chair, my house, my road, My town and my world behind me. I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring, I’ve swallowed the magic potion. I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king And dived in a bottomless ocean. I opened a book and made some friends. I shared their tears and laughter And followed their road with its bumps and bends To the happily ever after. I finished my book and out I came. The cloak can no longer hide me. My chair and my house are just the same, But I have a book inside me.
