April Meeting

For our April meeting, we met at a local sushi/hibachi restaurant and our book of the month was:

Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends that come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger.

Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook’s differences are impossible to ignore. The Island of Sea Women is an epoch set over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War and its aftermath, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers. Throughout this time, the residents of Jeju find themselves caught between warring empires. Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator, and she will forever be marked by this association. Young-sook was born into a long line of haenyeo and will inherit her mother’s position leading the divers in their village. Little do the two friends know that after surviving hundreds of dives and developing the closest of bonds, forces outside their control will push their friendship to the breaking point.

2018 End of Year Wrap Up

     So November and December were a bust for Book club. This tends to happen around holiday time because it is hard to gather such a large group when everyone is also dealing with extra family, cooking, cleaning, and all things dealing with presents. January will also be a no book club month because for some reason this year we all seem to need some down time after Christmas. We will resume book club meetings in February when we come together after reading Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.     I thought we could start off the new year by talking about how last years reading goals went for us and what our reading goals look like this year. Sam : I read 38 books and my goal was 24! I didn't meet all my goals though because I didn't finish the read harder challenge and I also stopped keeping track of what I had read which is really disappointing. September Meeting

The book of the month was: Who Am I If You're Not You? By Lynn Thorne     Real-life couple Marika and Jennifer were two soul mates facing a seemingly blissful future together until Marika revealed her authentic self: she was meant to be a man. Told from Jennifer's perspective, Who Am I If You're Not You? demonstrates the human capacity to love. How much pain can one woman stand?      We are a group of 11 people who love all different types of literature. Some of us read a lot and some of us read a little but no matter what we’re reading we love to discuss it. I’ve left my chair, my house, my road, My town and my world behind me. I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring, I’ve swallowed the magic potion. I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king And dived in a bottomless ocean. I opened a book and made some friends. I shared their tears and laughter And followed their road with its bumps and bends To the happily ever after. I finished my book and out I came. The cloak can no longer hide me. My chair and my house are just the same, But I have a book inside me.
